Fitness Apps Are Boring, We Need to Talk About It
Discover why most fitness apps fail, and how oNex reinvents movement with social connection, real-time challenges, and lasting motivation.
Written 7 days ago by Jamie 3 min readLet’s be real, the fitness app space is crowded. And not in a good, lively-market kind of way. More like a copy paste and pray it goes viral kind of way.
Every new app I see falls into one of three categories:
- Fitness Tracker: Steps, distance, pace. Cool.
- Nutrition Tracker: Calories, macros, sad salad reminders.
- Workout Planner: Reps, sets, more reps. Yay?
That’s it. Over and over. Same formula. Same UI. Slightly different shade of blue. And don’t even get me started on fitness influencers slapping their name on the same recycled workout app, promising you’ll magically transform your body in 21 days. Spoiler: it’s just a PDF with branding.
Like, yes, shoutout to the OGs who do it well. MyFitnessPal basically owns nutrition. Now, new companies like Ladder make solid strength training accessible. That’s great. We need those.
Now here’s the kicker, the fitness industry is booming. Post-COVID, people are more into fitness than ever. Billions are being pumped into the space. But where’s the actual innovation?
Take Strava, for example. A giant in the space, around since 2009. It’s still the go-to for runners and cyclists, and to be fair, they nailed the social element early. That’s what keeps people hooked, not just the GPS lines or pace charts, but the kudos, the comments, the recognition. The connection. But let’s also be honest: the UI is a mess. It’s confusing. Stressful. If you’re not already deep in the ecosystem, it’s not inviting, it’s overwhelming. And unless you’re running or cycling long distances, you kind of feel like you don’t belong. Like you’re not a “real” athlete unless your route spells out “hybrid athlete.”
Then you look at the other fitness trackers on the market and… they’re just boring. Numbers, metrics, graphs. Useful? Sure. Engaging? Absolutely not.
People don’t quit fitness because they don’t know how to log a workout. They quit because they’re alone. Because their app feels like a spreadsheet, not a community.
The fitness world is begging for solutions that actually motivate people. To connect. To engage. To make movement fun again.
So why do new apps keep copying what’s already been done? Why is everyone racing to be the next calorie counter, distance or sleep tracker, when what we need is something that actually helps people stick with fitness?
Where oNex comes in
We’re not here to track your macros or shout at you to lift heavier. We’re here to connect everyone through fitness and make exercise something you look forward to.
With oNex, we’re building for a different kind of connection. You don’t log workouts, instead, your movement and progress is captured from your pocket (and soon wrist). You see friends activity in real time, hyping them up, and join challenges that feel more like hanging out than tracking stats. You can even join a Spotify Jam equivalent for exercises with all your buddies. And because it ties into your own web of people, it becomes a natural way to stay connected and move together while also opening doors to new faces. Our tech learns what motivates you and keeps your routine fresh with challenges tailored to your goals.
Whether you’re lifting, meditating, running, or just trying to stay consistent, oNex makes fitness social, engaging, and something you actually look forward to.
Because fitness isn’t just about numbers. It’s about people.
And it’s time the fitness app industry remembered that.
